Gary Sockpick was born in 1968 in Nome, but was raised jointly in both Nome and Shishmaref.  He learned how to carve from his father Davis Sockpick and from his grandfather Teddy Sockpick.  Beginning with small earrings and pendants when he was only twelve years old, Sockpick is now known for his traditional Sishmaref style bone masks and figures.
